Answer to Do you know Chinese measure words? Try this Sample HSK Quiz

Correct Answer: A
Tā gěi wǒ jì lái le yì zhāng túpiàn.
他 给 我 寄 来 了 一  张    图片。
He sent me a picture.

Since there is no equivalent in English for certain measure words, you have to associate them with a similar word that uses the same measure word, which can help you understand. For example, the answer is “张 (zhāng) piece/ sheet.” This is also the measure word for paper, “一张纸 (yì zhāng zhǐ)” which means “a piece of paper.” Since picture is similar in shape you can think of it as, “a piece of picture” the same as you would with paper. Therefore, we should say  “一张纸 (yì zhāng zhǐ),”  and the correct answer is A.
Let’s take a look at the other answers:

个 (gè):

This is the broadest used measure word, and is mainly used for words that do not have a specific measure word with a special purpose associated with them. You can use it with people, fruit and celestial bodies.

Examples:

Gōngjiāochē shàng zhǐyǒu sān gè rén.
公交车          上      只有     三  个 人。
There are only three people on the bus.

Zhuōzi shàng yǒu liǎng gè píngguǒ.
桌子      上      有     两   个  苹果。
There are two apples on the table.

封 (fēng) and 篇 (piān):

Both of these measure words are used with products of literature and art. For example, “一封信 (yì fēng xìn),” which means “a letter,” or “一篇文章 (yì piān wénzhāng),” which means “an article.”

Examples:

Wǒ zuótiān gěi wǒ de māma xiě le yì fēng xìn.
我     昨天   给   我 的   妈妈  写 了 一  封  信。
I wrote a letter to my mother yesterday.
