Classroom Mandarin: Essential expressions for learning Chinese in Chinese

To learn Chinese, you need to immerse yourself in the language. This can be done wherever you are and from day one.

Yet many beginner lessons in Chinese are mostly conducted in English, talking about characters, tones or grammar.

While this can be helpful sometimes, you learn a language by engaging with it through listening and reading, speaking and writing.

Learn Chinese in Chinese from day one

As a student, your first priority should be to learn the most useful words and phrases. Interestingly, the most useful words are not the most common ones in the language as a whole, nor those taught in your textbook beyond the first few chapters (you do need basic pronouns and verbs, after all).

Instead, the most frequently used language in lessons and classrooms is that which is directly linked to learning; classroom Chinese, if you will, even though it doesn’t have to be in a classroom, physical or virtual.

Phrases like 中文怎么说? (zhōngwén zěnme shuō?), “How do you say [this] in Chinese?”, or 请再说一次 (qǐng zài shuō yí cì), “Please say it again”, are much more frequently used than phrases such as 你喜欢吃中国菜吗? (nǐ xǐhuān chī zhōngguó cài ma?), “Do you like eating Chinese food?”, or 今天是我的生日 (jīntiān shì wǒ de shēngrì), “Today is my birthday.”

I have said the former thousands of times as a student, but I think I’ve never said either of the other two, yet most textbooks teach the latter much earlier than the former.

Learn whatever Chinese words and phrases you need most often first

So, the quickest way to immerse yourself is to focus on the most commonly used language first, in the context you’re in. For most students, this means classroom language.

To make this as easy as possible for both students and teachers, I have compiled a list of the most useful classroom expressions in Chinese. If you want to skip my introduction to the list, including how to use it, you can use this link to skip down the page, or choose a specific section. For traditional characters, click here.

  2. Lesson and learning activity flow
  3. Feedback and encouragement
  4. Talking about the Chinese Language in Chinese
  5. Online and technology-related phrases
  6. Formal education-specific phrases

Students: Memorise the expressions as chunks

As a student, start with the expressions that seem relevant to you. All words and phrases are common in their context, so you can safely learn all of them. Naturally, start with those that you find yourself needing to say or understand the most often.

Normally, I don’t recommend memorising words or phrases from lists, but this is an exception. Keep a cheat sheet with you so you can check if you forget something. You’ll find that soon you won’t need that cheat sheet very often.

It’s okay not to understand how these phrases work. Learn them as a chunk that has a specific meaning and usage. You don’t need to know what 中文, 怎么 and 说 mean individually and how they function grammatically to ask your teacher how to say something in Chinese.

If you get bogged down in details for each phrase, learning the entire list will take you a semester, but if you just commit them to memory as chunks, you can learn them in days.

My list doesn’t cover everything, mostly because I don’t know your particular learning situation. If you encounter other expressions that you need to say or understand often, make sure you learn these in Chinese too.

Teachers: Use the phrases constantly in context

As a teacher, I suggest that you curate this list to suit your teaching situation. If you’re teaching online, maybe you need to expand that section, and if you’re not, it might be a good idea to remove it entirely.

Then make sure to constantly use these expressions in Chinese in lessons and encourage students to do the same. Provide students with cheat sheets or paste important phrases on the wall.

Introduce the expressions gradually when they are needed or when they slot naturally into the flow of a lesson. Constantly model how the phrases are used. Use gestures, point to pictures or refer to a printed version of the phrase list.

I need your help to collect more useful expressions

Please help me develop this list further by suggesting additions, deletions or modifications. My goal is not to cover every possible case or every different way of saying something, but I have probably missed some important expressions. Please leave a comment to let me know!

The ultimate list of classroom Chinese for students and teachers

This list is an attempt to solve a practical problem. Every time I want to hand a student a list, I have to make one or adapt one I already have. The same is true for many of my teacher colleagues. This list was created by drawing on all that experience, then trying it out with real students.

To make the list as useful as possible, I have split it into several sections. The goal is to help you choose the right expressions for you, and more importantly, make it easy to ignore things you don’t need. If you’re not learning online, you can skip that part, and if you’re not enrolled in a formal course, you can skip that section.

Here is the list, including simplified characters, traditional characters, Pinyin and English translation. You can also access the list as a Google Document or download it as a Word file. For traditional characters, click here. Enjoy!
